About the project

Ahoy there! We’re Mind the Gap.

We’re an award-winning touring theatre company, based in Bradford, and we work with and train learning disabled actors. Hereafter known as kings n queens of the high seas, arrr.

Our work raises people's expectations of what theatre can be and what people with learning disabilities are capable of. We produce excellent quality theatre and provide opportunities that wouldn't otherwise exist.

Our 2013 touring performance will be an adaptation of Treasure Island. Arrr! We want to create a fun free-to-download pirate app, which can be shared easily and widely. We’ll use this to reach lots of new people and ask them to join us, be involved in our productions and support us to make new projects and activities happen.

The future funding for arts organisations in the UK is uncertain. Your donation will help us fill the hole in the map, marked ‘here be dragons’, and with continued public support, enable our work with learning disabled actors and musicians to continue for many years to come.

We’ve recently been awarded Catalyst support from the Arts Council, which promotes private giving and they will match every £1 we raise this way. So, for every £25 you give us, we’re actually raising £50. Bountiful treasure!

We like to entertain people, make them think and show them a good time, so although we're asking you to dip in your pocket, we're also hoping you'll join us for the journey and enjoy the ride! And we've a haul of special pirate booty to thank ye for yer support!

Please pledge anything you can, tell people about us, and come on board and be part of our crew…

You can find out more about our work here: http://www.mind-the-gap.org.uk

More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
We believe passionately in quality, equality and inclusion. Our mission is to dismantle the barriers to artistic excellence so that learning-disabled and non-disabled artists can perform alongside each other as equals. It's more than drama about disability, it's professional theatre by disabled people. No other company tells stories like we do. Our world is diverse and it's important that audiences see professional actors with learning-disabilities on their stages. The funding of the arts has changed significantly over the past few years, and we need to actively look for new sources of income. Key to this will be introducing our work to a wider audience, and asking our audiences to help support us. Websites like this one prove a lot of people giving a little can make a massive difference to projects and organisations! However, you won't see a dry fundraising strategy on our desks. We're absolute believers in the power of drama, storytelling and entertainment to open doors, and we want you to feel proud of the work you help create by supporting us.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
tbc.
What is your solution?
We need to reach out to our audiences to ask for their support to help us create future projects and events. We appreciate that everyone is feeling the pinch these days, so whilst we'd welcome with big open arms (and jazz hands) any large donations, we also need to ask lots and lots of people to give us smaller amounts. An app allows us to reach a global audience; recent national TV coverage of Mind the Gap led to a flurry of enquiries from across the UK, and we have links to other organisations across the globe. People are interested in what we do once they hear about us, but we need new ways to reach those audiences and let them know we exist. Small but mighty, the pirate app has wide appeal and will spread the message about our work. Think of it as a door opening, every time someone downloads, plays with or shares our app. And we're ready to stick our head around the door offering a flask of tea and a slice of cake. (We like cake almost as much as we like pirates - almost).

Vision and mission

Mind the Gap is a registered charity and professional theatre company. Established twenty-five years ago, our mission is to create the conditions for learning-disabled and non-disabled artists to work alongside one another as equals and achieve artistic excellence. The company’s artistic programme is driven by three clearly defined strategic objectives: • creating excellent theatre • developing skilled artists • achieving sustainability We are based in Bradford in Yorkshire, and perform our shows around the UK and internationally. In addition to our theatre productions, we provide qualified and part time actor training courses for people with learning disabilities, as well as a variety of outreach opportunities.

Our track record

Previous acclaimed performances include Of Mice and Men, Don Quixote, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Stig, Irresistible and Boo, a completely new work inspired by the character of Boo Radley from Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird. We have received the Stage Award for Outstanding Achievement in Regional Theatre at the Barclays/TMA Awards for our adaptations of classic texts. We reach wide audiences; almost 10,000 people saw our award-winning adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice & Men which was performed 50 times at theatres and arts centres across the UK.
