About the project

The core aim of the WWWe Project is to develop a new social networking platform for activists, artists, peace makers, communitarians – all those that want to engage in change. It will be friendly, easy to use and owned by the community.

What we will be doing with your support:

Developing the platform - this will facilitate networking and resource sharing for potentially thousands of groups, which requires careful design and build from the outset. To check we are on track, we will be working with a number of communities to test platform before it is launched.

Spreading the word about this exciting new tool - we will be working with creative people to make the promotion of this dynamic project as exciting and inspiring as possible, reflecting the spirit and energy that is WWWe. The feedback to some of our existing promotional animations has been fantastic.

Once built, the WWWe networking platform, will continue to be developed with frequent and regular feedback from a wide range of organisations and individuals. It will
• Enable like-minded people to better connect and work together both locally and globally, online and offline
• Enable people to share all kinds of resources and ideas
• Offer a place to find opportunities to become involved, e.g. set up projects, volunteer, pledge time or resources, innovate and campaign

More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
The key problems are - People want to make a difference and work with others in doing do. - Individuals find it a hard and lengthy process to meet like minded people to work with on projects and ideas - Groups and organisations (especially small and/or local) need better tools to help people to work together - Networks are pigeon-holed by issue making it hard for those keen to work across issues that interrelate.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
- The project launched in October 2011 and already almost 1,000 individuals have signed up to the mission - In our research survey 88% of individuals who responded said that they wanted such a platform (our survey response rate was 33%) - Paul Hawken in his book, Blessed Unrest, estimates that there are 1-2 million diverse organisations working in a myriad of ways towards 'ecological sustainability and social justice'
What is your solution?
The solution is to develop a social networking platform specifically designed for change makers. At its heart is the ability to put in your location and find out what is going on in your area, and also to put in your interest and find like minded people across the world Tools for collaborative action and education will also be developed in due course.
How will you deliver this?
We are currently developing the platform with the award winning Yoomee Digital Ltd. They specialise in creating bespoke social networks, tools and apps for online communities working for social good.

Get involved

Here are some great ways to get involved with the project and help out. If you have...
  • 2 minutes
Sign up to the project at http://wwwe.org so that when we launch the networking platform, we can start with a bang, getting it working for communities around the world in an instant!
  • 5 minutes
Encourage your friends, family and colleagues to sign up too!
  • 15 minutes
Join the Big ‘W’ Crowd - Take a photo of you (and maybe a few friends) making a big ‘W’ (e.g. with your hands) - Add it to our Flickr group (www.flickr.com/groups/wwwe) or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wwwe.org) or send it to us at photo@wwwe.org - And whilst you are at it, send it to your networks explaining what you doing and why you love this project.
  • 30 minutes
Send us your dreams and stories of hope… on a postcard, in an email or via a video (see http://wwwe.org/dream-on). We will share the best ones, to support and encourage each other in working towards the future.
  • A few hours
Become a beta tester… try out the platform as it develops and give us feedback. Email joanna@wwwe.org for more information.
  • Regular time commitment
Put it in your diary to keep in touch and spread the word. Take ten minutes each month to look at the WWWe site and comment through your social networks on all the new and exciting things you find there!

Our track record

The World Wide We (WWWe) Foundation was founded as a Community Interest Company by Dr Joanna Brown in June 2011, with the support of an advisory team replete with extensive experience in the areas of design, business, finance and internet development. Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, and Fritjof Capra, a systems theorist, are the patrons. The project also has the support of numerous change makers including Jonathan Robinson (The Hub), Tim Smit (Eden Project), Andrew Simms (N.E.F.) and Benjamin Zephaniah. The following organisations have already seen the potential benefits of the proposed networking platform within their own organisations and have signed up as beta-testers: Devon School for Social Entrepreneurs, Encounters, Fairtrade Foundation, Mothers’ Union (Wakefield Diocese), RESET, Schumacher College, Tearfund, TIDAL and Transition Town Totnes.
