Volunteer Action

by Nightsafe

About the project

Nightsafe has an emergency night Shelter for homeless young people aged 16 to 24.

The shelter is entirely staffed by our full-time volunteers. These volunteers are young people who come from different parts of the world to give their time and energy. They add another dimension to our project with young people giving help, support and encouragement to young people who are homeless and in need. The volunteers also introduce the young people to different cultures and ideas.
Volunteers come to Nightsafe for between 6 months and a year, during this time we provide pocket money and food allowance and pay for their accommodation and bills.

The volunteers gain from our training and support and the young people gain positive role models who are there to listen and offer the practical help they need to get back on track. Both volunteers and young people learn from each other’s backgrounds and grow in understanding and tolerance.

We are seeking £3900 to fund one volunteer for 12 months. Nightsafe depends on the support of its community to continue helping young people off the streets. You could become part of that community by supporting this project. Through supporting one volunteer at Nightsafe you could help shape and influence the lives of many homeless young people in a very positive and meaning full way.

As one volunteer said: ‘Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work here. I truly learned a lot from the amazing staff and young people. It’s a priceless experience for me. I’m glad that I got to be a part of this warm family.’

Young person’s comment: “Being homeless is a struggle and Nightsafe offer that warm hug most wanted in that situation”

More about the project

What is the social/environmental problem/issue that this project will address?
Nightsafe works with an increasing number of young people who are street homeless or vulnerably housed this can be a result of a number of factors including family breakdown, relationship problems, abuse, domestic violence, loss of job etc. Many young people have multiple issues and barriers to settling in their lives, including: abuse, drug and alcohol issues, behavioural issues, poor physical health, emotional and mental health issues, self-harm, bereavement and loss, learning difficulties, poor literacy and numeracy skills, lack of education, no life and social skills and no appropriate adult support.
Can you give us some statistics on this problem?
In 2011 223 young people stayed in our Night shelter, 182 young men and 41 young women they stayed for a total of 1825 nights. 55 young people where homeless due to family disputes and 45 asked to leave either friends or family. Through our day time service and night shelter we saw 669 young people all in need of housing support many homeless or sleeping on friend floors. Last year 83% of young people using the Night Shelter had a positive move on.
What is your solution?
Nightsafe has 4 projects enabling us to take a holistic approach to the issues facing homeless young people, an emergency night shelter, a day centre and 2 supported housing projects. Our emergency night shelter offers an immediate response to young people’s homelessness, giving them up to 9 nights off the street, giving time to work with them to find more permanent accommodation.
How will you deliver this?
Young people staying in the shelter are given their own room for the night, laundry and washing facilities, evening meal, breakfast, a warm welcome and listening ear by our 6 volunteers, 2 staff the Shelter every night. These volunteers are young people who give up to a year to work with vulnerable homeless young people, often in crisis and at a very low point in their lives. Our volunteers who come from across the world to work in the project are positive role models and peer mentors to the young people helping break barriers down and build young people’s confidence.
